The NIVI digital platform gives companies across Europe easier access to calculating their carbon footprint to fulfil growing demands for emissions data.
Customers, investors, regulators and supply chain partners are increasingly demanding transparent emissions data from companies, driven by EU reporting requirements and consumer pressure. To meet these demands, companies need to collect and calculate data on their operations and supply chain. This is currently difficult for many companies due to the complexity and effort involved. NIVI provides an intuitive, free tool that calculates a company's emissions based on operational and supply chain data.
Turning Sustainability Requirements into a Strategic Advantage
As companies of all sizes are increasingly required to demonstrate their carbon footprint, companies can gain a competitive advantage through their emissions data and sustainability strategies. Internally, a carbon footprint can also inform strategic decisions and enable companies to optimize their processes and supply chains.
A real-world example demonstrates how climate accounting enables sustainable decision-making: Danish furniture company Duus & Møller had a detailed climate report created for the first time with NIVI. This gave the company valuable insights into which emission sources have the most significant impact on its CO₂ footprint. The report showed that most emissions came from the supply chain, particularly from material procurement and product transportation.
“Gaining insight into our climate footprint has been eye-opening. The climate accounts have provided us with precise data that allows us to make more targeted and responsible decisions,” says Hanne Møller Andreasen, co-owner of Duus & Møller.
DNV Verified Quality and Free Access for All – A Simple Path to Climate Reporting
A unique feature of NIVI is its verification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This ensures that its calculation methods meet the highest standards of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, allowing companies to rely on the quality and accuracy of their data.
To ensure that sustainable transformation is not a financial burden, especially for smaller companies, NIVI remains completely free. The goal is to lower the entry barriers for businesses and make climate reporting accessible to all.
“Companies like Duus & Møller demonstrate that even smaller businesses can take responsibility for their CO₂ footprint. With free access to tools like NIVI, businesses of all sizes can gain the insights they need to make sustainable decisions,” says Rune Loftager, Managing Director of NIVI Digital.
How to Get Started with Sustainable Business Practices
The process towards more sustainable business practices can be overwhelming at first, but there are some simple steps that break it down into concrete actions:
Step 1: Collect & Analyze Data – Identify which emissions need to be recorded. Creating a climate account for a company is a comprehensive way to collect and analyse data. It was also the first step that Duus & Møller took with the support of NIVI.
Step 2: Map & Prioritize Emissions – Identify the most significant CO₂ reduction potentials. Only once a climate account has been created, can you map and prioritize your emissions. In this step, Duus & Møller found where their most significant emissions laid and which areas in their business were possible to change.
Step 3: Set Goals & Take Action – Implement sustainability strategies based on reliable data. After mapping the significant emissions, you can take concrete goals and actions to reduce them.
Step 4: Engage Partners & Supply Chains – Collaborate with suppliers and stakeholders to optimize sustainability efforts. Many possible actions lay within the supply chain of a company. Duus & Møller wanted to get more detailed insights into the supply chain, so as a manufacturing company the natural next step was to have a closer look at their product's environmental footprint. They are now working on Life Cycle Assessments for more comprehensive insights, not only on a company, but also at a product level.
During this Process, for Duus & Møller realized that beyond analysing and reducing emissions, the longevity of its furniture already makes a significant contribution to sustainability. High-quality materials and timeless designs extend the lifespan of products, reducing the need for new production.
